IAP GKN Project

Industrial Air Power supplies new vacuum and compressed air systems to run the GKN A350 Spar Manufacturing production facility in Bristol. The site will produce composite parts for the Airbus A350 aircraft.

GKN Aerospace is a First Tier supplier to the global aviation industry, working on every major fixed and rotary-wing aerospace platform. A leader in composite and metallic technologies, their business is equally focused on military and civil markets.

Their new facility in Easter Compton Bristol that will supply composite parts for the Airbus A350 aircraft has recently been completed. The major project was run by Kier with MJN Colston.

Following a successful tender process for the Compressed Air and Vacuum systems the Industrial Air Power package was preferred based on technical merit, efficiency and reliability.

The two separate Ingersoll Rand compressed air systems (one for each production facility) included the supply of GRP plant rooms housing variable and fixed speed compressors, dryers, filters, intelligent controller and condensate management system.

Each production facility has a high level distribution system constructed using the Teseo aluminium pipework system.

The Vacuum system supplied by Vuototecnica includes three sets of pumps and controller, housed within a GRP plant room supplying a high level 6” plastic distribution pipework system.

The turnkey project included the design, supply and installation of all vacuum and compressed air plant room equipment, three GRP plant rooms, over 4 Kilometres of pipework, testing and commissioning.

GKN Comment:

"This is the first time GKN have worked with IAP on a large new installation. The final design had not been fixed for pipework and location of external pump houses, requiring a very flexible open design philosophy, IAP had to work along side other service providers to install usable pipework ring main based systems along with meeting the timescales required.

With the on-site presence of the project manager & his team this was achieved with very few snags. Final commissioning proved to be very successful for both services within the first production area, utilising for the first time “Teseo” extruded aluminium pipework & fittings combined with the installation of energy efficient Ingersol Rand compressors for compressed air. Vuototecnica pumps were installed for vacuum with a PVC high level vacuum ring main. Both systems incorporate a duty & standby capability to protect production requirements. "
